【Exhibnition Statement and artist’s Bio】

Talia Nizarane, Ella Shiraz, Luane Hubert, and Carolina Aguirre are four practitioners who met at the Kyoto City University of Arts. Coming from different backgrounds and professional training was not an impediment for them to find links between their practices. They now present this exhibition as a culmination of their journey.

Nizarane’s installative practice explores space and materiality, while her performances attempt to reach people in their everyday environments and confront them with social injustice that would be otherwise easily ignored. Her work is informed by cultural and historical dilemmas in her native Cuba. Also concerned with space is Ella Shiraz, whose work explores the queer self in correlation to space, movement, and dance, through a New Materialist lens. Hubert’s work, on the other hand, revolves around a constant research around drawing. She builds image-sculptures from all kinds of references that she collects. Finally, Aguirre’s multi-disciplinary art practice is informed by her experience having worked in the film industry and as a curator.

We would like to thank the staff members and team of professors at the Kyoto City University of Arts for their incredible support that made this exhibition possible.
